Vegetarian Indian food in Malta: more than a side note
By Tanvi ·
Vegetarian Indian food in Malta has a serious address: Tanvi, a modern Indian restaurant in St George’s Bay, St Julian’s, opened in July 2026. Vegetarian dishes run the full menu, from chaat and tandoor-cooked Malai Paneer to Hyderabadi Aubergine Salaan, Aloo Gobi Gnocchi, dal, breads and desserts, all built for sharing and mixed tables.
Vegetarian at Tanvi
- Chaat and snacks that are vegetarian before you even reach the mains
- Malai Paneer, smoked and charred in the tandoor
- Curries where the vegetable is the centrepiece, not the substitute
- Breads, rice, dals and sides built for the middle of the table
- Kulfi, Bhappa Doi and chocolate mousse to finish
- In St George’s Bay, St Julian’s: a 2-minute walk from Paceville, 15 minutes from Spinola Bay along the promenade

Every vegetarian who travels knows the moment. The table is booked, the menu arrives, and while everyone else reads for pleasure, you scan for the one dish that was never really meant for anyone. On holiday it stings a little more: you came to Malta for long evenings by the sea, not for another pasta with the vegetables stirred through as an apology.
Indian food never got that memo. And at Tanvi, neither did we.
Indian vegetarian cooking
Why India does vegetarian better than anyone
India is home to more vegetarians than anywhere else on earth, and it shows in the cooking. This is a cuisine where lentils are slow-cooked with as much ambition as any roast, where paneer goes into a clay oven and comes out smoked and charred, and where an aubergine can carry a whole plate on its own. Vegetarian food there is not a restriction. It is a tradition with centuries of technique behind it.
That is the tradition our kitchen works from. Nothing on the vegetarian side of the Tanvi menu is a dish with something removed. Each one was designed to be exactly what it is.
Vegetarian restaurant in St Julian’s
A full vegetarian dinner, start to finish
Begin where the menu begins: the chaat and snacks are vegetarian before you even reach the mains. Bhel Puri with raw mango, tamarind and sev. Sev Puri, crisp and bright. Kale and Red Onion Pakora, Whipped Channa, Rajma Galouti, Papads with Chutneys. Then the table gets serious.
Malai Paneer
From the tandoor: soft paneer with smoke and char on the outside, served with summer tomato, sweet onion and basil.
Hyderabadi Baby Aubergine Salaan
The aubergine as the main event, in a sauce of peanut, sesame and tamarind. Deep, rich and completely satisfying without going near meat.
Aloo Gobi Gnocchi
Potato and cauliflower, the classic pairing, given a contemporary shape with pickled cauliflower and brown butter.
Slow-Cooked Dal Makhani
Black lentils and time. The quiet luxury of the menu, and the dish vegetarian kitchens are judged by.
Saag Aloo
Spinach and potato, properly spiced. A side that behaves like a main when the table lets it.
Burnt Garlic Tarka Dal
Yellow dal finished with burnt garlic. Proof that the simplest pot on the table can steal the evening.
Bring it together with kulchas, parathas and turmeric rice. Finish with kulfi, Bhappa Doi or the chocolate mousse with black cardamom. A full dinner, first plate to last, and not one compromise in it.

Vegetarian dinner in Malta
One table, mixed appetites, no negotiations
Most group dinners in Malta have the same quiet problem: one or two vegetarians, a table of meat eaters, and a menu that makes somebody settle. A sharing menu fixes this by design. The vegetarian plates at Tanvi are not a corner of the kitchen; they arrive in the middle of the table like everything else, and they tend to be the dishes everyone reaches for.
For a vegetarian dinner in Malta with a mixed group, this is the easy answer. Group dining starts from eight guests, and we will help you shape the food around the table. Email info@tanvimalta.com or use the contact page to plan it.
